How to Apply Training Zones to Your Running Plan

A common misconception is that training harder always leads to faster improvement.

The reality is very different.

Most runners should distribute their training approximately as follows:

  • 70-80% of training volume in lower zones (Z1-Z2)
  • 15-20% in moderate zones (Z3-Z4)
  • 5-10% in higher zones (Z5-Z8)

Why can’t I stay in Zone 2?

In some cases, alternating between running and walking is necessary to stay within the desired intensity range.
